THE TRUTH OF FAMOUS AARTI
I asked some people if they knew who was the author of the famous Aarti “Om Jai Jagdish Hare”. One replied that every aarti has been sung since time immemorial.
One called this aarti a part of the Vedas!
And one said that its creator is probably actor-producer-director Manoj Kumar!
“Om Jai Jagdish Hare”, Aarti is sung in every Hindu home today! On the lines of this aarti, aarti of other gods and goddesses has been created and sung!
But very few people know about the author of this original Aarti!
Pt. Shradharam Sharma or Shradharam Phillauri was the author of this aarti.
Pt. Shraddharam Sharma was born in Phillaur town located in Jalandhar district of Punjab.
He was a Sanatan Dharma pracharak, astrologer, freedom fighter, musician and famous Hindi and Punjabi litterateur!
He was married to a Sikh woman, Mahtab Kaur.
Since childhood, he had a keen interest in the subject of Jyotish and literature.
Although he did not get any kind of education, but he studied in Gurmukhi till the age of seven years and by the age of ten, he was well versed in Sanskrit, Hindi, Persian languages and astrology!
He wrote books like ‘Sikkhan De Raj Di Vithiyan’ and ‘Punjabi Samachar’ in Punjabi (Gurumukhi).
Sikh de raj de vithiyan was his first book. In this book, he had told about the founding of Sikhism and its policies in very pity manner!
This book proved to be extremely popular among the people and the British government included this book in the course of the then ICS (now Indian name has become IAS) examination.
Pt. Shraddharam Sharma had a good knowledge of Gurmukhi and Punjabi and had written his first book in Gurmukhi, but he believed that only through Hindi can his words be reached to more and more people!
Eminent Hindi writer and litterateur Pt. Ramchandra Shukla has considered Pt. Shraddharam Sharma and Bharatendu Harishchandra as the first two writers of Hindi!
He wrote a novel called Bhagyavati in 1877 which was in Hindi. It is believed that this is the first Hindi novel.
This novel was published in 1888. Pt. Shradharam died before its publication, but after his death his wife had published this novel after suffering a lot of pain!
Also, Pt. Shradharam Sharma was very famous for religious stories and lectures.
He used to create an atmosphere of public awakening against the British rule, giving the example of Mahabharata, that by listening to his narrative, every person would feel a sense of patriotism!
This led to the awakening of the British Government and in 1865, he expelled Pt. Shradharam from Phullauri and banned his entry to the surrounding villages!
But the books he wrote were being read in schools and he continued.
The expulsion had no effect on him, rather his popularity increased.
During the expulsion, he wrote many books and kept in touch with the people.
Pt. Shraddharam not only lit the torch of revolution against the British government in his lectures but also worked extensively for literacy.
In 1870 he wrote an aarti which was to be sung in the house in the future. It was the Aarti – Om Jai Jagdish Hare …
Pt. Sharma used to sing Om Jai Jagdish Aarti wherever he went to give lectures.
His Aarti started becoming popular among the people and then even today after many generations, this Aarti has been sung and has become popular.
This arti was used by famous producer director Manoj Kumar in one of his films and hence many people associate the name of Manoj Kumar with this arti.
Pt. Sharma always abstained from publicity and self-praise. Perhaps it is also a reason that people who read his works with passion are not familiar with his life and his works.
Pt. Shraddharam Sharma breathed his last on 24 June 1881 in Lahore.
